Managing Partner of the law firm of Townsend Lockett & Milfort, LLC and Co-Author of When The Cops Knockin’: An Illustrated Guide to Criminal Law.
For as long as he can remember, Travis Townsend has successfully juggled his professional pursuits with active civic engagement and community service. These activities often include speaking out on behalf of the underserved and those with limited resources. So, it comes as no surprise that he joined his brother - Trinity Townsend - in writing a book designed to educate and empower parents and youth with the information they need to stay on “the right side of the law”.
Raised in a high-crime, low-income community in Muskegon Heights, Mich., Travis and his brother tested the boundaries of the law—like most teenage boys and young men their age. Luckily, Travis avoided the type of activities that led to serious consequences for others around him and navigated his path toward a successful career in law. He attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. After graduating, he remained in Ann Arbor to study law at the University of Michigan School of Law, receiving his Juris Doctor degree in May 2003. During his law school tenure, Travis served as executive notes editor of the Michigan Journal of Race & Law.
Travis is now the Managing Partner of the law firm of Townsend Lockett & Milfort, LLC, in Atlanta, Georgia, and heads its business law, corporate and securities transactional practices. Before becoming the Managing Partner of Townsend Lockett, Travis was a Senior Associate in Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, PLLC’s corporate transactional group. Prior joining Womble Carlyle, he worked for Morris, Manning & Martin, LLP where he was actively engaged in the Morris Manning Diversity Committee and Legal Opinion Committee. Before joining Morris, Manning & Martin Travis worked as a corporate attorney with Alston & Bird, LLP, also in Atlanta.
Outside of the professional arena, Travis serves on the Executive Committee of the Atlanta Urban League Young Professionals as its Vice President. He is a member of the Board of Directors of M.E.N.S. Wear, Inc.—a non-profit organization that provides life skills, economic support and entrepreneurship assistance to urban men and male youth in the greater metro Atlanta area. And, he has served as a Big Brother volunteer for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Atlanta since August 2005.
Fully committed to making a difference in the lives of others, Travis is a frequent speaker at community events and conferences. Travis is also a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He is an active member of both the American Bar Association and the National Bar Association.
